The Treatment

What Is Dermalux Tri-Wave MD

Dermalux Tri-Wave MD is a medical-grade LED treatment used to improve skin clarity, reduce inflammation, and support skin recovery.

It is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that uses clinically targeted wavelengths of light to stimulate normal cellular activity within the skin. In practical terms, this means calmer skin, healthier function, and better recovery — without needles or downtime.

Because of this, Dermalux can be used both as a stand-alone treatment and as part of a wider treatment plan to support healing and enhance results.

Clinical Science

The Science Behind
LED Therapy

LED vs. Laser Technology

While both methods utilise light, they operate very differently. Lasers deliver a highly concentrated, tightly focused beam to a specific area. LED therapy, conversely, bathes the skin in gentle, broad-band light. This allows us to achieve targeted, visible results without the heat or downtime associated with lasers, utilising specific wavelengths to encourage distinct cosmetic improvements within the skin.

The Clarifying Power of Blue Light

Blue light is widely used for blemish-prone skin because of how it interacts with the bacteria associated with breakouts. The molecules within these surface bacteria do not simply let blue light pass through; they absorb it. Once absorbed, the light energy triggers a reaction that destabilises the bacteria, helping to deeply purify the skin. This specific wavelength is chosen precisely for this interaction, making it a highly effective tool for encouraging a clearer, fresher complexion.

Supporting Recovery with Red Light

While blue light focuses on bacteria, red light therapy plays a crucial role as your skin enters its recovery phase. Red light penetrates deeper to support the skin's natural repair processes, making it highly effective at calming residual post-blemish redness. It is also widely used to revive dullness and promote a radiant, more even-toned complexion. Knowing exactly when to introduce red light is key — depending on how your skin is behaving, timing may vary. We will discuss this with you during your consultation to ensure your skin receives exactly what it needs, right when it needs it.

Applications

What Dermalux
Can Help With

Dermalux Tri-Wave MD is commonly used as LED phototherapy to support treatment of a range of skin concerns, suitable for most skin types.

Acne & Breakouts

Blue light targets acne-causing bacteria while reducing inflammation, supporting clearer skin over a course of treatments.

Redness & Inflammation

Near-infrared and red light calm reactive or inflamed skin, making Dermalux useful for sensitive and rosacea-prone skin.

Dull or Stressed Skin

Red light stimulates cellular activity, improving skin brightness, tone, and overall radiance over a course of sessions.

Fine Lines & Early Ageing

Red light supports collagen production, helping improve skin firmness and reduce the appearance of fine lines over time.

Post-Procedure Recovery

Dermalux is widely used after aesthetic procedures to calm the skin, reduce downtime, and support recovery.

General Skin Health

Suitable for most skin types as a regular maintenance treatment to support ongoing skin health and function.

The Experience

The Treatment

A simple, relaxing treatment that fits easily into a normal day. No preparation needed, no recovery time required.

Comfortable & Relaxing

The LED panel is positioned just above the skin while you relax comfortably beneath it. Protective eye shields are worn throughout. Most patients find the experience genuinely restful.

Around 20 Minutes

Each session typically lasts around 20 minutes, making it easy to incorporate into a busy day before or after other appointments.

No Downtime

The treatment is completely painless and requires no downtime. You can resume normal activities, apply makeup, and go about your day immediately after.

Treatment Course

How Many Sessions

Dermalux is delivered as a structured course rather than a one-off treatment. Many patients begin with a course of 6 sessions, while a course of 10 sessions is often recommended for more established or persistent concerns.

Treatment response is reviewed after this initial phase, and further sessions or maintenance may be recommended depending on individual progress.

The right plan depends on your skin concern, condition, and goals — always discussed at consultation.

Why Dermalux®

Not All LED Devices
Are Equal

Dermalux Tri-Wave MD is the flagship clinical platform within the Dermalux range and offers a higher-specification treatment than smaller or lower-powered systems.

It combines three therapeutic wavelengths in one medical-grade device, allowing treatment to be tailored more effectively to concerns such as acne, inflammation, skin rejuvenation, and post-procedure recovery.

In a medical clinic setting, the quality of the device influences the quality, consistency, and breadth of treatments it can deliver.

Why Dermalux®

Medical-Grade
LED Therapy

Chosen for performance rather than convenience — a system that delivers clinically meaningful results across a range of skin concerns.

Three Therapeutic Wavelengths

Blue, red, and near-infrared light in a single device allows treatment to be tailored to the specific concern — something smaller or single-wavelength devices cannot offer.

Medical-Grade Performance

Dermalux Tri-Wave MD is the flagship clinical platform in the Dermalux range, offering higher specification and clinical consistency than consumer or lower-powered devices.

Versatile Applications

Suitable as a standalone treatment or alongside other aesthetic procedures where supporting recovery and reducing inflammation are important.

Suitable for Most Skin Types

LED therapy is non-ablative and gentle, making it suitable for sensitive skin and appropriate for use across a wide range of skin types and tones.

Questions

Dermalux — Common Questions

LED phototherapy — photobiomodulation — is one of the more extensively studied light-based approaches in skin medicine. The three wavelengths in Dermalux Tri-Wave MD are used because each has a documented effect: blue light interacts with the bacteria involved in acne, red light stimulates the cells responsible for collagen production, and near-infrared light calms inflammation deeper in the skin. What it is not is an instant fix. The effect is cumulative, which is why it is delivered as a course, with results building gradually as the skin responds. At consultation we will tell you honestly whether light therapy is the right tool for your concern — or whether something else would serve you better.
Mostly dose. A clinical system like the Tri-Wave MD delivers substantially more light energy, at precisely controlled wavelengths, than home devices are designed to deliver — the same idea at a very different strength. Home masks are not useless, but the results reported in clinical studies of LED therapy come from medical-grade doses delivered on a structured schedule, which is what a supervised course provides. The two can also work together: some patients use a home device between clinic sessions to support maintenance.
LED phototherapy has a strong safety record and is used across all skin types, including deeper tones. It uses visible and near-infrared light only — no UV — so it does not tan or burn the skin, and eye shields are worn throughout. One honest point for darker skin tones: there is a small, usually temporary risk of a change in pigmentation, which is exactly why the treatment is doctor-led — your skin type and pigmentation history are assessed first, and the settings are adjusted to you. A number of medicines and medical conditions can also affect suitability, so every plan is confirmed by a doctor before treatment begins.
Relaxing, genuinely. You lie comfortably beneath the LED panel with eye protection on for around 20 minutes. Most patients feel a gentle warmth from the light, and many find the session restful enough to switch off completely. There is no pain, no numbing, and nothing to recover from — you can apply makeup and carry on with your day straight away.
Dermalux works cumulatively, so sessions are scheduled close together — usually around twice a week — rather than spread out. Most patients start with a course of 6, while a course of 10 is often recommended for more established or persistent concerns. Your response is reviewed at the end of the course, and monthly maintenance sessions are available afterwards to help hold the results. The exact plan is agreed at your consultation.
Many patients notice an immediate freshness after a session — skin often looks brighter and calmer the same day. But the changes that matter build gradually, because the effect is cumulative rather than instant. Most people begin to see a visible difference after several sessions, often around the four-to-six mark, with clarity, tone and redness continuing to improve across the course. For skin rejuvenation, collagen carries on remodelling for some weeks after your sessions finish, so results keep developing even once the course is complete. Your progress is reviewed at the end of the course to decide whether further sessions or maintenance would help.
Yes. Dermalux courses can be spread over your treatment plan at 0% interest with no charges of any kind. You pay a deposit equal to your first session when you book, with the balance repayable in up to six instalments across your course. There is no credit application or third-party lender — it is arranged directly with the clinic at your consultation. See our payment plans page for how it works.
