What Is SkinPen® Microneedling
SkinPen® is a medical-grade microneedling device used to treat the skin's surface and dermal layers. It works by stimulating the skin's own repair process rather than adding any product.
During treatment, the device creates thousands of tiny channels at a controlled depth. This triggers a repair response, including new collagen and elastin formation.
Over time, this process helps the skin gradually become smoother, firmer, and more even in appearance. Unlike treatments that add volume, microneedling focuses on improving the skin itself.
What SkinPen®
Can Improve
SkinPen® is commonly used for a range of texture, scarring, and firmness concerns across the face and body.
Microneedling stimulates collagen production which can help soften the appearance of acne scars over time.
Collagen stimulation helps smooth early wrinkles and improve skin firmness across the treated area.
Microneedling helps refine rough or uneven skin and restore a smoother surface across the treated area.
Improving collagen support around pores can help them appear smaller and more refined over time.
Microneedling can improve the appearance of stretch marks by stimulating new collagen in the skin.
The skin renewal process can help improve overall tone and brightness across the treated area.
How SkinPen®
Works
A SkinPen appointment is straightforward and patient-led, from initial consultation through to leaving the clinic.
Skin concerns, suitability, treatment areas and likely number of sessions are discussed. Expectations are kept realistic.
The skin is cleansed and numbing cream is applied for around 20 minutes before treatment begins.
Treatment usually takes around 25 minutes. Most patients describe a prickling, scratching or vibration sensation, with intensity depending on the area and depth treated.
Redness similar to mild sunburn is expected. Aftercare advice is explained before you leave the clinic.
After Your Treatment
SkinPen® is minimally invasive, but the skin still needs time to settle and renew afterwards. Most people experience redness for around 24 hours — often similar to mild sunburn.
The skin may also feel warm, tight, dry, or slightly flaky for several days as the outer layer renews itself. Most patients return to normal activities the following day.
Post-treatment advice is provided to help protect the skin and support recovery in the days after treatment.
When Results Appear
Early changes in texture and brightness may begin to appear as collagen remodelling becomes established.
More noticeable improvement usually develops over the following months as collagen remodelling continues.
Collagen remodelling can continue for many months after treatment, with gradual refinement in texture and firmness.
Microneedling vs
Injectable Treatments
Rather than competing approaches, microneedling and injectable treatments are often complementary depending on the concern being treated.
- Triggers the skin to remodel its own collagen
- Improves texture, firmness and acne scarring
- Best for surface and dermal concerns — pores, scarring, fine lines, tone
- No substances or volume added
- Places hyaluronic acid or other products directly into the skin or tissue
- Smooths wrinkles, restores volume, or hydrates the skin
- Includes dermal fillers and skin boosters such as Profhilo
- Adds substance to the skin
In many cases, microneedling and injectable treatments are used together as part of a broader skin treatment plan.
Why We
Use SkinPen®
SkinPen® was the first microneedling device to receive FDA clearance and is widely used in medical settings worldwide.
SkinPen® was the first microneedling device to receive FDA clearance and remains one of the most widely studied. It is used in clinics worldwide and supported by published peer-reviewed data.
The device allows precise control of needle depth, enabling treatment to be adjusted for different areas of the skin.
SkinPen uses sterile single-use cartridges that create vertical micro-channels at a controlled depth — distinct from home dermarollers, which use fixed-depth needles at an angle and carry a higher risk of tearing or infection.
Treatment takes around 45 minutes after numbing cream, with most patients tolerating it well. Redness usually settles within 24 hours, allowing a return to normal activities the following day.

Questions Answered
The most common questions patients ask about how SkinPen microneedling works, what to expect, and how it compares to other collagen-stimulating treatments.
Does SkinPen microneedling hurt?
A topical numbing cream is applied to the skin for around 20 minutes before treatment, so most patients describe the sensation as mild prickling or light vibration rather than pain. Bony areas such as the forehead and jawline can feel slightly sharper. Treatment is generally well tolerated.
How is SkinPen different from a dermaroller?
They are not equivalent treatments. SkinPen is a professional medical device with sterile single-use cartridges and adjustable needle depth, used in clinical settings. Home dermarollers are fixed-depth devices reused over time, with a higher risk of skin damage and infection.
How many SkinPen sessions will I need?
Most patients benefit from a course of three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Fine lines and texture often respond within three sessions, while deeper acne scarring usually needs six or more. The number of sessions and spacing is confirmed at consultation based on the concern and skin response.
When will I see results from SkinPen?
Early changes in skin texture and tone typically appear from around four weeks after the first session, as the repair process becomes established. The most visible improvement develops over three to six months as new collagen continues to remodel. Collagen remodelling can continue for up to a year after the final session.
Can SkinPen be combined with other treatments?
Yes. SkinPen is often combined with skin boosters such as Profhilo or Ameela for deeper hydration, with Sunekos skin bio-remodelling for amino acid-based renewal, or with Exion radiofrequency for added skin tightening. Combinations are planned in the correct order and spacing at consultation.
Is there any downtime after SkinPen?
Expect redness for around 24 hours, often compared to mild sunburn, and the skin may feel warm, dry or slightly flaky for several days as the outer layer renews. Most patients return to normal activities the following day, with mineral sunscreen and gentle skincare for the first week.
